77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly's Political Declaration

Karachi, March 30, 2023: Ali Jillani, Head of Diplomatic Affairs, Greenwich University, addresses the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly's Political Declaration Consultation of the SDGs Summit 2023 on behalf of the Asian Pacific Civil Society. Mr. Jilani’s intervention focuses on socio-economic and political inequalities in the Global South, Covid induced multidimensional crises: neo-liberal designs strangulating poor countries in debt traps, unfair trade rules and illicit financial flows: devasting effects of climate change: asymmetrical power relations: failures of thought-leadership in policy & governance and the need for inclusive multilateralism and stronger political will to address some of the most critical challenges of our times. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit is a high-level meeting convened by the United Nations General Assembly to evaluate progress towards achieving the SDGs, which were adopted in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The summit is held annually and brings together leaders from governments, civil society, the private sector, and international organizations to discuss the implementation of the SDGs and identify new strategies for achieving the goals. The SDG Summit 2023 brings leaders and experts from around the world to discuss progress towards the SDGs and identify strategies for accelerating progress in the decade leading up to 2030. The Summit also focuses on COVID-19 and the need to prioritize just and equitable recovery efforts that address the root causes of inequalities and injustices within and among countries. The summit highlights the urgent need to address the interconnected challenges of poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation, and emphasized the importance of collaboration and partnership between governments, civil society, and the private sector. Participants at the summit discussed a range of strategies for achieving the SDGs, including increasing investment in sustainable infrastructure, improving access to education and healthcare, and promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns.
