Why choose sm

Five reasons this school exists.

  1. 01

    Teach from year one

Your first lesson to camera, watched back with a supervisor.

  2. 02

    Be corrected early

Recorded microteaching, coded and improved session by session.

  3. 03

    Work in real schools

A supervised placement with a mentor teacher and a real class.

  4. 04

    Produce knowledge

A fieldwork study or policy brief on a question that matters here.

  5. 05

    Go deeper

Four MPhil routes and three doctorates sit above the degree.

The purpose

Every other profession in this country is downstream of one: teaching.

Yet teacher education is largely delivered as theory, and the first time many graduates stand in front of thirty children is the day they are employed.

sm. was built to move that moment years earlier — into a model classroom, on camera, in front of a supervisor, while it is still safe to be bad at it.

Inside the Educational Engine

The sm. Formation Floor

Not a lecture theatre with a teaching-practice module at the end. Six rooms where you teach, are watched, are recorded, are corrected — and then go and do it in a real school.

01

The model classroom

A full working classroom on campus.

You teach it, your peers are the class, and everything is observed.

02

The microteaching lab

Short lessons, to camera.

Watched back frame by frame with a supervisor — the room that makes bad habits visible early.

03

The social research lab

Methods and fieldwork.

Research design and academic writing, applied to questions about Karachi rather than borrowed ones.

04

The survey & data studio

The Karachi Social Survey lives here.

Instrument design, sampling, collection and the statistics that make it defensible.

05

Seminar & debate rooms

Argued out loud.

Political science, international relations and policy, against people who disagree with you.

06

Literacy & community clinic

Beyond the campus.

Reading and learning support delivered to children and adults from surrounding communities.

The formation cycle

Six steps, from foundations to leadership

The cycle every teaching route runs, and runs again.

  2. 02Microteach
  3. 03Observe
  4. 04Practise

Four stages · one teaching record

What you will have taught, by when.

Stage one

Foundations & first lesson

Learning theory, development and ethics — then your first short lesson to camera.

Stage two

Microteaching & methods

Subject methods and a term of recorded microteaching, each session coded and improved.

Stage three

The school placement

Supervised practice in a partner school, with a mentor teacher and a class that is yours.

Stage four

Research & leadership

A fieldwork study or policy brief on a real question, presented at the Teacher Leadership Forum.

The sm. graduate promise

A teacher who has never produced knowledge only passes on someone else’s.

Leave with a teaching record — lessons delivered, hours supervised, recordings reviewed, learners taught — plus one piece of published research or a defended policy brief.

A living lab for education and society

From microteaching and classroom practice to social research, policy analysis and public debate. Students graduate ready to teach, investigate and contribute. Named in honour of Dr. Seema Mughal, Vice Chancellor.

Why it carries this name

Prof. Dr. Seema Mughal

Named in honour of Prof. Dr. Seema Mughal, Vice Chancellor of this university — an educator before an administrator.

Naming a school of education after a teacher is the argument the school is making: that the profession deserves the same standing as the ones it produces.

The teaching record

A B.Ed elsewhere ends with a certificate. sm. ends with a record.

Plus one piece of published research or a defended policy brief.
