Course Overview

This course is an overview of small business management and includes methods and procedures for establishing a small business, problem solving techniques required for successful operations, entrepreneurial traits and risks; location selection and franchising. It is intended to introduce students to the ideas and concepts of entrepreneurship and creation of new ventures. The course revolves around entrepreneurs the founder of new ventures and processes whereby entrepreneurs conceive and launch new ventures, either new firms or within existing firms. The later part of the course deals with issues of managing growth in the entrepreneurial firm. Special attention is devoted to the entrepreneur within the opportunity space of the pervasive family firms in Pakistan. This course is designed for those interested in starting their own business, either as their primary income or extra income, including individual contributor businesses such as freelancers, contractors, consultants, and others in the gig economy. The curriculum is centered on three key aspects of entrepreneurship: 1) the individual, their traits, skills, and attributes that make entrepreneurs successful, 2) the business ideas, how to generate them, where to look for them, how to expand them, and 3) how to ensure they are valid business ideas with potential to meet profit goals. These elements, developed in the course, will assist any current or potential entrepreneur develop and grow a business now or in the future.

This course is useful for Marketing Professionals, MBA /BBA students have interest in marketing, and young professionals interested to develop their career in field of marketing.

Course Objective

  • Understand the traits, skills, attitudes and drive necessary to be a successful entrepreneur.
  • Identify personal strengths and weaknesses matching the profiles of successful small business owners.
  • Develop personal growth plans to address weaknesses and capitalize on strengths in order to increase their potential to succeed in small business.
  • Understand the needs of target markets related to potential viable business idea.
  • Size the potential market for potential viable idea.
  • Develop initial sales, profit, competitive landscape and future growth for potential viable business idea.
  • Match potential viable idea to personal assessment profile.
  • A sensitization of the applications and limitations of functional concepts in entrepreneurial decision-making
  • A capacity to explore personal, team and business issues as they take their plans from idea generation to full development
  • An understanding of the regulatory environment and agencies which entrepreneurs will be exposed to both at start up and through the years ahead

Learning Outcomes

  2. Research its potential and understand the risks associated
  3. Undertake marketing, positioning, and customer development
  4. Prepare an analysis of the financial requirements and build a financial strategy for the new venture, including incremental appreciation of the equity base
  5. Plan for the execution and management of all the relevant functional areas of new venture including operations, supply chain, information systems, and human resources etc.
  6. Identify and prepare legal documents, IP policy, contracts, etc.
  7. Develop a comprehensive business plan for their venture
